Oaklin's Birth
When I found out I was pregnant I was thrilled and a little worried because of a hyperthyroid condition. My doctor assured me my thyroid was now functioning perfectly, the pregnancy had fixed it! Pregnancy was fun and happy and I loved my affirmations and relaxation cd's and naps. My affirmation was "everyday animals all over the world give birth -naturally"
On September 26th we went garage saleing around town and then I needed a nap. When I awoke mild surges had started. Me and Chris (baby-daddy) went about our day with mild surges throughout some close together some farther apart. We were laughing with excitement all day and having fun. I fell asleep that night knowing I would meet our child very soon.
I woke up the next morning with mild surges but they followed more of a consistent pattern. We waited a few hours and then rang our doula, Karen, to let her know we thought we would have our baby that day. We headed into my moms around noon because she lives closer to a hospital than us. Things were getting a little heavier and through surges I would become solely focused on breathing and thinking of my baby and visualize opening. Karen came around 2 pm and things slowed down so we went for a walk. The walk was slow and got things going again, we stopped a lot so I could lean on Chris and breathe. After some time sitting on the ball and breathing through surges Karen thought we should head to the hospital (around 5pm).
At the hospital I was 3-4cm dilated. I tried the tub but it wasn't comfy through surges and I just wanted to lie down. Lying on my side was much better and I stayed that way until the baby came. My water hadn't released yet and I had bulging membranes and I was having a lot of pressure and was hurting. Karen wanted me to go on my hands and knees to see if my water would release, and I just wouldn't and I think it would have really helped. At 8:15 pm I was 7-8 cm and finally at 8:20 my water released. By 8:40 I was fully dilated and 5 minutes later I was pushing and more waters released. My body wanted to push so I wasn't going to resist. I was loud through these surges and needed to be reminded to breathe. At one point I looked at Karen and she said "your doing so great your baby will be here by 9:30." I knew Karen wouldn't say that unless she was very sure. I looked at the clock ,9:05, I was re-energized with excitement to meet our baby so soon. We were also very lucky to have a really positive and helpful nurse. It was intense, painful and beautiful. I breathed and grunted, pushed and howled and at 9:42 pm our 9lb baby boy was here alert and so strong. I wouldn't change a thing, we had our perfect, drug-free, natural birth and a healthy baby born on his due date Sept 27, 2009.
