Hey, mama. If you’ve ever found yourself hovering over a sink or gripping the side of the bed, praying for the wave of nausea to pass, then this one is for you.
I want to say something that a lot of pregnant women don’t hear enough: You don’t have to love every part of pregnancy. We get bombarded with “glowing goddess” messaging, but the truth is that morning sickness is tough. You can love your baby and still hate feeling sick every day.
If you’re clutching a cracker on the couch, wondering if you’ll ever feel normal again, I see you. Today, I’m sharing one of my favorite pregnancy nausea tips: a simple technique called the Sitali Breathing Technique (or Shitali Pranayama).
What is Cooling Breath (Sitali)?
Think of Sitali as your body’s natural air conditioner. It is a powerful cooling breath for nausea that helps lower internal heat and calm the nervous system.
When you feel sick, your body often enters a “fight-or-flight” mode. This stress response can actually make your symptoms worse. By using pregnancy breathing exercises, you send a signal to your brain that you are safe, allowing your system to reset. While it’s not a “cure-all,” it is a highly effective tool for natural morning sickness relief that you can use anywhere.
The Science Behind the Cool
Recent research has highlighted that pregnancy nausea is often linked to a hormone called GDF-15. When your body is sensitive to this hormone, your nervous system stays on high alert. Using a cooling breath helps to:
- Lower Core Temperature: Reducing the “overheated” feeling that triggers gagging.
- Regulate the Vagus Nerve: This nerve controls your digestion and heart rate; calming it is key to stopping nausea during pregnancy.
- Interrupt the Nausea Spiral: Shifting focus from the stomach to the breath can reduce vomiting in pregnancy by stopping the dry-heaving reflex.
How to Practice Sitali for Pregnancy Nausea Relief
Ready to try it? You can do this in your car, at your desk, or lying in bed.
Step 1: Find Your Position
Sit comfortably where your spine can be tall and relaxed. Drop your shoulders away from your ears.
Step 2: The “Taco Tongue”
Curl the edges of your tongue into a little “taco” shape, sticking it out slightly past your lips.
Note: If you can’t curl your tongue (it’s genetic!), just purse your lips as if you are holding a straw and let the air flow over your tongue.
Step 3: Inhale Cool, Exhale Warm
- Inhale deeply through your curled tongue (or pursed lips) for a count of 4. Feel the cold air hitting the back of your throat.
- Pause for just a second at the top.
- Close your mouth and Exhale slowly through your nose for a count of 4.
Repeat this for 3 to 5 rounds. This simple rhythm is one of the best morning sickness remedies because it requires zero equipment and works in under sixty seconds.
Why This Helps Calm Nausea Naturally
Physically, the moisture on your tongue evaporates as you inhale, which literally cools the blood vessels in the mouth and throat. Energetically, it shifts you out of the panic that often accompanies a wave of sickness.
Even if it only gives you 60 seconds of relief, those 60 seconds are a “reset” button for your brain. It reminds your body how to feel calm again. You can’t overdo this; it is completely safe and a great way to calm nausea naturally throughout the day.
Take the Next Step to Feeling Normal Again
For some women, these pregnancy breathing exercises are enough to take the edge off. But if you’ve tried every tea, cracker, and wristband and still feel miserable, it’s a sign that your nausea is driven by something deeper.
In my free training, I dive into the “Hormone Intolerance” theory and how you can shift your body’s response to GDF-15 to finally find lasting relief.
